“In the last five years, no one has released more consistently excellent blues albums than Atlanta's Tinsley Ellis, and his latest project once again validates his status. Ellis produced the disc, penned nine of the 11 tunes, sings like a man possessed and wields a mean lead guitar from start to finish. His sidemen are in the pocket, his original material is solid, and Ellis' performance shows sublime confidence and grit: Check his guitar work on the midtempo "Freeway Soul." In a more ferocious vein, both "Somebody" and his cover of "I Take What I Want" find Ellis and guitar in suborbital mode.”

The Show Must Go On! Despite record rainfall and unprecedented flooding, the Mississippi Valley Blues Society's 24th Annual Blues Festival soldiered on in Davenport, Iowa over the July 4th weekend. Scenic LeClaire Park was just too wet to allow staging to be set up, so the MVBS mobilized the troops and moved the entire festival up the hill into downtown. And the effort was well worth it, with a stellar lineup - including Jimmy Thackery, The Kinsey Report, Elvin Bishop, Otis Taylor, Koko Taylor, Billy Boy Arnold and Jody Williams, Denise LaSalle, and the Holmes Brothers - providing more than enough energy to replenish the souls of the weary volunteers and 10,000 plus festival-goers. Tinsley and the boys delivered what was by all accounts an electrifying set upon the Main Stage to close out the three-day event on Saturday night. Interestingly, Tinsley's first appearance at the MVBF was in 1989, when he was the first band to play on the first day of the festival. Nineteen years (and several thousand gigs and several hundred thousand miles) later, and he's the closer for one of the finest music events to be found anywhere in the country. Kudos to the Mississippi Valley Blues Society for a job well done...
Check out these photos by Mako Funasaka of Talkin' Blues! Mako caught Tinsley and the band at Jeff Healey's club in Toronto, Canada, on a recent visit. Not only was the crowd wowed, but we are, too, by these pics. Check out the whole series here, and be sure to look at the rest of the fine content at Talkin' Blues...,
